My clinical experiences consisted of a rotation at a hospital, time with outpatients, and time in a long term care facility. I completed my time at the hospital and outpatient clinics during spring semester 2014, and my time at a long term care facility during the fall of 2013. I was able to be exposed to a large number of patients, with differing diagnosis and nutrition care processes.
I completed my clinical experience at a 231 bed acute care hospital, with a level II trauma center. I was able to see multiple patients, and learned how to use an electronic charting system used by the facility. I worked with patients who had multiple conditions. Some needed supplements, some needed tube feeding, and others needed TPN. I saw a wide variety of patients with differing circumstances.

I spent 1 week at a diabetes outpatient counseling center. I completed an additional 40 hours with the hospital dietitians who offer both outpatient counseling and outpatient diabetes classes. I was able to observe counseling for diabetes, cancer, eating disorders, food allergies, weight management, and eosinophilic esophagitis.

I spent 2 weeks at a long term care facility helping the dietitian with clinical tasks. I was able to do a large amount of charting while there. I was also able to learn how to write orders. I attended multiple care conferences as well as speak with multiple clients. I attended the all managers meeting daily. I was able to be there when a dietitian from Sodexo was there to audit the charting as well as the kitchen.
